Inspired by a good book collection my cousin had, and ofcourse, enthused by the freizeit that I have been enjoying in the last few days, I have started my good old habit of reading books. Thought it would be a good idea to blog about how these books influenced me. Let me begin with details of what I booked (books read) in May 2007. Hope I would have a ‘booked’ entry for each month from now on.

Author: Ayn Rand

Until my college days, my ideologies were leaning more towards socialism and had felt that it was the duty and moral responsibility of one individual to share the burden of the other. Over a period of time, I realized that socialism would take us nowhere and just result in a nation with lazy bunch of people. Socialism would inhibit even an iota of willingness to succeed in our people. For example, if you let your friend copy and pass the exam, your friend would never try to learn on its own, depending on you every time to pass the exam.

This book reinforced my faith in capitalism. In my opinion, governments’ role is just to ensure a level playing field. I still remember the gist of Vivek Paul’s comment during one of the “Walk the Talk” shows: “When government relaxes its unnecessary restrictions and leaves the fields in which its presence is not necessary, the country would prosper in those fields just as a farming land prospers when famine leaves it.” Governments’ role is to ensure that talented people get the opportunity without any restrictions or reservations and thereby grow and hence, help in the growth of the nation.

In simple words, “If you can’t do something, then just leave it for other capable people to do”

By looking at all the land grabbing incidents in the recent past, by industries (singur, etc) or individuals, I can only quip:

“India ke kisanon ke man me gum hai,

Kyon ki keti ke liye zameen yahaan kum hai”

To be frank, I very much expected this, rather was afraid of. After all itz a M$’s product :-/. Customers don’t turn ur back Puhleaaaze, for am sure a ‘Service Pack’ is already in the making. Go get the Zune all ye fellas, so that my dream comes true.

My dream: Zune puts up a stiff competition, initiating a price war, so that I can buy my favorite Apple Ipod or Creative Zen Vision M for a slightly lesser price for this Christmas.

It is still too early to say who could be at advantage here with this deal. Microsoft or Novell? Windows or Linux?

Microsoft has killer Office applications. If this deal turns out in such a way that these applications, though closed are made available on Linux, it could mean a huge gain for Microsoft in short term on the applications front. Linux OS might gain in terms of gaining people who would turn away from it just because they could not use a killer application. But, I am curious about what would happen to many of the opensource applications that exist as replacements? Will they be able to compete on back of community support?

On the other hand, if opensource applications gain access to supporting Microsoft application’s closed formats better, it could mean a significant gain for the opensource community.

So, thought, I would putforth my theory as well. Since the day I started using Netvibes, got fascinated and hooked on to online desktop idea. I can see any new mails in my gmail account, check for any feeds that I had subscribed to, chat with my friends using meebo tab, all from one place.

Google also looks to try and build its own online desktop; but it is nowhere close to what Netvibes offers. The pace at which Netvibes has added features and number of users is impressive. So my theory – Google which wants to make a mark in desktop (future is online desktop) would benefit greatly by buying Netvibes. There have been few thoughts that Netvibes might fit well with Yahoo. But, here are some of my points as to why would Google be a better suitor than Yahoo.

1. Netvibes already supports mail plugin for gmail. It also provides one for Yahoo, but, since pop access in Yahoo is limited to premium users would imagine only a small crowd uses it for yahoo.
2. Netvibes already supports writely. Advantage Google here.
3. Netvibes has plugin for flickr. Google may want to have one for picasaweb soon.
4. Netvibes has a video search plugin for both Google and YouTube videos.
5. How about a plugin for orkut dominating rather than the one for MySpace?

Imagine Google getting all its users under one roof using a powerful online desktop!!
